Have you ever heard of the Peppered Moth? It's a great example of how living things can change because their environment has changed. And it's not just them!

An introduction to animal and plant adaptations.

What makes an organism suited to a particular environment?

An adaptation is a mutation, or genetic change, that helps an organism, such as a plant or animal, survive in its environment. Due to the helpful nature of the mutation, it is passed down from one generation to the next. As more and more organisms inherit the mutation, the mutation becomes a typical part of the species. The mutation has become an adaptation.

Animal Adaptations

  • Animals inhabit every part of the globe from deep oceans to the freezing poles, scorching Equatorial deserts and lush rainforests. To survive and reproduce, they have adaptations that make them suited to their environment. This video game inspired, primary-aligned programme looks at the structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations of some fascinating animals including arctic foxes, echidnas, humpback whales and camels.

Plant Adaptations

Plants have adaptations to help them survive (live and grow) in different areas. Adaptations are special features that allow a plant or animal to live in a particular place or habitat. These adaptations might make it very difficult for the plant to survive in a different place. This explains why certain plants are found in one area, but not in another. For example, you wouldn't see a cactus living in the Arctic. Nor would you see lots of really tall trees living in grasslands.

This program investigates the basic characteristics of aquatic and terrestrial environments and the adaptations of the plants that live in those environments.
