Single Use Plastic

We see the term ‘single-use’ plastic plastered all over our social media feeds and across newspapers and the television. It is becoming such a common theme in many countries around the world to experience some sort of news about single-use plastic each week.

Single-use plastic are items which are used once, then thrown away. Apart from making your local park or green space look like a landfill site, plastic pollution contributes to many other disastrous effects. Some of the most obvious ones include; animals getting their heads stuck in or ingesting plastic bags, damage done by dome lids, rings that disable, resulting in suffocation or being unable to eat; animals eating plastic pieces, no matter how big or small, contributing to starvation, choking or illness; and also plastic leaching into the soil, affecting the way plants grow.

Mental Health (COVID)

The potential for the COVID-19 pandemic to impact mental health and wellbeing was recognised early in the pandemic (WHO 2020a). In addition to concerns around contracting the virus itself, some of the measures necessary to contain its spread were also likely to negatively impact mental health (NMHC 2020). Widespread restrictions of movement and physical isolation, or ‘lockdowns’, were implemented in some jurisdictions from March 2020. In addition, the overnight loss of employment and social interaction, as well as the added stressors of moving to remote work or schooling, has impacted the mental health of Australians. Stress, confusion and anger are commonplace (Brooks et al. 2020) and, while many people will not experience any long-term concerns, COVID-19 has the potential to contribute to or exacerbate long-term mental ill health including depression and/or substance misuse (WHO 2020b).

Free Britney

Britney Spears has been under a conservatorship helmed by her father, Jamie Spears, since the singer's infamous breakdown 12 years ago, which resulted in hospitalisation and rehab. Though the stigma surrounding Spears's mental health battles has followed the singer since 2007, her career never faltered.

Despite multiple comebacks, however, Britney's longtime fans have vocalised their dissatisfaction in seeing the pop star continue to be under a conservatorship at 38 years old.
