"He was not of an age, but for all time." So wrote Ben Jonson in his dedicatory verses to the memory of William Shakespeare in 1623, and so we continue to affirm today. No other writer, in English or in any other language, can rival the appeal that Shakespeare has enjoyed. And no one else in any artistic endeavour has projected a cultural influence as broad or as deep.

William Shakespeare is one of the most famous authors in English literature known for writing tragedies. Some consider Shakespeare's play Hamlet to be one of the best plays ever written. Some of the most popular tragedies written by William Shakespeare include Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and King Lear. All of these tragedies are widely studied and performed.

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth sometime between 1605 and 1606, shortly after the ascension of King James of Scotland to the English throne. The new monarch brought Scotland—previously known to the English only as a mysterious, conquered neighbour—into the public limelight. The period of James' reign was further marked by political and religious conflict, much of which focused the kingdom's attention on the danger of regicide.
