Christmas in the Philippines

In the Philippines they like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible.

Going caroling is a bit part of Filipino culture at Christmas time.

A special decoration for Christmas is a star lantern called the 'parol'.

On Christmas Eve Filipinos go to midnight Mass then celebrate 'Noche Buena' which is a big feast with lots of food.

On Christmas Day children line up to perform a traditional Filipino greeting of respect to their older family members. This is called 'pagmamano'.

The elder then hand the children crisp money notes. This is called 'aguinaldo'.

Giant Lantern Festival

This festival is held each year on the Saturday before Christmas Eve.

It is held in the city of San Fernando.

11 villages take part in the festival.

They build beautiful lanterns and add lots of lights.
