Key Terms

Adoration = The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that "Adoration is the acknowledgement of God as God, creator and savior, the Lord and master of everything that exists as infinite and merciful love." (CCC #2096)

Apparition = Supernatural vision. It is a psychical experience in which a person or object not accessible to normal human powers is seen and ordinarily also heard.

Archbishop = A bishop of the highest rank, who is in charge of all the bishops and priests in a particular country or region.

Bishop = Bishop, in some Christian churches, the chief pastor and overseer of a diocese, an area containing several congregations. Bishops are the successors of the Apostles and that an unbroken line of succession connects the Apostles to all Bishops, a doctrine known as Apostolic Succession.

Cardinal = Cardinal, a member of the Sacred College of Cardinals, whose duties include electing the Pope, acting as his principal counsellors, and aiding in the government of the Church throughout the world.

Confession = Confession, also called reconciliation or penance. The acknowledgment of sinfulness in public or private, regarded as necessary to obtain divine forgiveness.

Catechesis = The word catechesis comes from the Greek meaning "to echo the teaching" meaning that catechesis or the teaching of the faith is an interactive process in which the Word of God re-sounds between and among the proclaimer, the one receiving the message, and the Holy Spirit. Catechesis is a life-long process of initial conversion, formation, education, and on-going conversion.

Celebration = A religious ceremony. The term has come to be applied especially to the Eucharist, as the Church's principal liturgical celebration, giving the highest honour and praise to God.

Diocese = The group of churches that a Bishop supervises is known as a diocese. Typically, a diocese is divided into parishes that are each overseen by a Priest.

Discernment = The ability to judge well.

Homily = A sermon or informal discourse on some part of the Sacred Scriptures.

Mass = The central act of worship of the Roman Catholic Church, which culminates in celebration of the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Pilgrimage = A journey religious people take to a holy place or a place of religious significance.

Pope/Holy Father = The Pope is the Bishop of Rome, and thereby the world leader of the Catholic Church. The word comes from the Latin pāpa, which means “father.” 

Stations of the Cross = The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. 

Vigil = A religious service held during the night leading to a Sunday or other feast day.

Vocation = A call from God to a distinctive state of life, in which the person can reach holiness.
